■ 朱文章 金士頓公司數年前曾以1億元分紅員工，成為業界佳話。日前接受訪問時，創辦人孫大衛說，金士頓實行「傻瓜賺錢術」（compete against dummies）：他最強調產品品質，競爭對手的產品卻經常出錯，相形之下，好像在跟傻瓜競爭，不贏也難。 正如孫大衛自許的：「我是工程師，我做的東西能壞嗎？」他以身作則（sets a shining example），公司有此榜樣（a bellwether），當然能夠勝人一籌。 例："He is such a good salesman that he sets a shining example for the rest of the staff." 「他的業績無以倫比，大家拿他當榜樣學習。」 把關者 勿當爛好人 俗話說「一夫當關，萬夫莫敵」（A man with courage makes a majori-ty.）。孫子兵法也說：「夫將者，國之輔也。輔周則國必強，輔隙則國必弱。」美國職棒大聯盟德州游騎兵隊投手柯恩有次投球不穩，被教練換下場，他抱怨說自己不累，還可以再投。教練老實告訴他：「你當然不累，不過那些外野手都累趴在地了。」可見，把關者說實話的重要性。 為何孫大衛的產品高人一等？其實工程師都知道自家產品如何，只是不敢具實以報，寧願先出貨衝業績再說。人都不喜歡聽壞消息，局勢不好，有些人不敢把壞消息告訴老闆，只能委婉地說（putting a spin on it）。否則老闆生氣起來，還會遷怒於傳話的人（shoot the messenger），因此大家都變成爛好人（no one wants to be the messenger）。 例：" I think it is unfortu-nate that people spend so much time trying to save face and putting a spin on it."「大家都不敢面對現實，還巧言令色搬弄歪理曲解事實，真令人痛心。」 "If you shoot the messenger, you will find that you quit getting the news" 「如果你還是如此剛愎自用，那麼就不會有人告訴你事情的真相了。」 充分授權 擔負成敗 商場瞬息萬變，如何像孫大衛一樣變成常勝將軍呢？所謂「將在外，君命有所不受」（The field commander must make the decision even if it goes a-gainst the King's previous orders.）就是充分授權，一旦原則確立後，就不再事事干預。越戰時，美軍指揮官多在直昇機上督戰，經檢討後效果不彰，後改由地面部隊指揮官（the man on the ground）直接掌握，不再接受遙控，以免影響勝負。 例："He's the man on the ground, making deci-sions based on the knowledge gained from his time there." 「他具有實戰經驗，不憑空瞎說。」 "Along with the authority there also comes the responsibility. When you take command, you also have to be willing to take the consequences if things go bad."「有權就要負責。當你下達指令，就要為成敗負責。」 商場和戰場一樣，都要戰勝對手才能生存，有了上級授權，更要懂得變通。美國內戰安地潭之役，北軍極占優勢，統帥麥克廉將軍（George McClellans）用兵遲鈍，被南軍打得落花流水，林肯總統只好把他免職，而「反勝為敗」（He was able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.）。 紙上談兵 可能是書呆子 例："There are many George McClel-lans in your department, in that they find ever-new ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory." 「你的部門裏蠢才最多，每天盡想些怪招，把公司搞垮為止。」 這位麥帥雖然用兵失策，苦吞敗績，但他15歲就進西點軍校，並以第一名成績結業。英文形容這種熟讀兵法，卻只會紙上談兵的人是「書呆子」（educated fool）。 例："He might have a degree from Harvard, but he is just an educated fool." 「他雖然有哈佛學位，但是個不知變通的人。」（作者是陸軍官校語言中心主任） 【2006/07/02 經濟日報】
